What drives or motivates me?
I would say there are 3 core things that drive me in my professional and personal life. The 3 things are application, curiosity, and learning. For me, the order of these things is also important.
After a ton of reflection over the past few years I feel like I actually understand how I grow. This growth ranges from general knowledge to setting life goals. Which again have typically followed the actions and pattern above. Here are how these factors have played out at various stages in my life.
I would like to give you a challenge if you have made it this far. Reflect on yourself and life, figure out what drives you, what you like and what you hate. I have found this understanding can help create focus for your personal, academic, or professional growth. If you are coming up empty or feel like you are not sure where to start I would suggest trying new things. There is nothing more revealing than trying something new and seeing how you feel. It is through this mentality that I have learned my main factors for success and motivation.
- Curiosity
- Learning
- Application
After a ton of reflection over the past few years I feel like I actually understand how I grow. This growth ranges from general knowledge to setting life goals. Which again have typically followed the actions and pattern above. Here are how these factors have played out at various stages in my life.
- Curiosity - I love “seeing what happens” this tends to have its own consequences but yolo. One time I was curious how a backpack floats in water. So I threw my backpack in a river after school. There was no real reason outside of wondering how it floats and bad impulse control. PS - It floats for like 10 seconds and then disappears below the water
- Learning - Another thing I tend to gravitate towards is learning. For me, learning means, seeing and doing. Reading is not a strength of mine as I am sure my wife can attest. Nonetheless I love to listen to audiobooks, watch youtube videos, and listen to others. SEO wise I feel this is a perfect fit since there are a lot of website reviews, search result viewing, and tons of comparison and evaluation. I don’t have a great example of this, outside of some of my blogs, webinars, or trainings. PSS - If you ever want to learn about SEO (or any of its nuances) I am more than happy to teach anytime!
- Application - The last thing that really drives me is ‘trying things out’. This is probably the best way I know of understanding my depth of knowledge, practical skill, and expertise. A quick example of this would be my general dabbling in various hobbies. I have done and continue to do a lot of things. I like to build gunpla (plastic models), creating training decks, leatherwork, miniature painting, gold mining, board/card game development, clay/plastic modeling, fossil hunting, shirt printing, and more. PSSS - If you are curious about starting any of these I may have a tip or two , feel free to chat me on slack.
